CLEAR (CERAMIC) BRACES

Clear braces can provide a more attractive alternative to traditional metal braces. Among the biggest advantages of clear ceramic braces is that the visibility of braces on the teeth is minimized. In most cases, these orthodontic appliances are constructed of plastic alloys or ceramic. They function in a similar manner to conventional metal braces. These types of braces are most commonly selected by adults because they are less noticeable.

Limitations of Ceramic Braces

Constructed of ceramic, these types of clear braces are more fragile than metal braces. While metal braces are capable of absorbing a large degree of force without sustaining damage, that is not the case with ceramic braces. As a result, they are slightly more prone to breaking than metal braces. Due to the this, clear ceramic braces may not be a good choice for the lower teeth, due to their tendency to fracture if eating the wrong foods.

If you are considering undergoing orthodontic treatment, but you are uncertain as to whether clear or metal braces are the right choice, it’s important to schedule a consultation with our team at mBrace Orthodontics to discuss your specific needs and concerns.

To counter breakage issues, some clear ceramic braces are now being manufactured to resist fractures. Although these braces are bulkier, most patients do not notice it. Even these braces can still be susceptible to breakage if they are subjected to heavy forces.

It should also be understood that a metal archwire is still necessary with clear ceramic braces. This wire runs across the teeth and is held in place with a bracket on each tooth via an elastic band. With ceramic braces, the wire is usually silver, although a frosted or white wire can often be used instead so that your braces are less noticeable.

Differences Between Metal Braces and Clear Ceramic Braces

Although treatment using clear ceramic braces is similar in nature to traditional metal braces, there are some differences. First, prospective patients should be aware that the duration of treatment using clear ceramic braces may vary as compared to metal braces. Since ceramic brackets tend to be more fragile than metal brackets, if heavy forces are applied and brackets are broken, treatment times may be extended.

Some patients may also note that ceramic brackets tend to cause more irritation to soft tissues. Ceramics often have a rougher feel against the cheeks and lips than do metal brackets. Over time, most patients eventually become accustomed to that difference.

It’s not always possible to place ceramics on the bottom teeth due to the potential for significant wear. Due to this reason, we will need to evaluate your bite and the way your teeth overlap to determine whether ceramic braces are the best choice to place on your lower teeth.

You will also still need to wear elastic bands with clear ceramic braces. Most patients are able to select matching bands that are clear or tooth-colored, which can help to reduce the overall appearance of the braces.

There is often a tendency for light-colored elastics to become stained due to exposure to certain foods and beverages. This can prove to be visually distracting. Any food or beverage that has a strong color could potentially stain your bands, including tea, coffee, soda, berries, ketchup, mustard, or tobacco products. The bands are changed frequently so this should be not be a concern.

Sapphire Braces

Clear braces are also sometimes referred to as sapphire braces. They may be a good choice for patients with extremely white teeth. This is because the braces blend in with your teeth.

Invisalign Orthodontics

For patients who wish to avoid the use of ceramic or metal braces altogether, Invisalign® is a great alternative. This treatment solution is comprised of a clear plastic material. Most patients find the aligners are extremely comfortable to wear and not noticeable to others. This option is a good solution for patients who are interested in discrete treatment.

While braces are often considered to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing smile, wearing braces can also help to improve your overall dental health. When your teeth are straight, there is a significantly lower risk for periodontal disease, tooth decay, and other dental issues.

Individuals who have been avoiding seeking orthodontic care due to the appearance of braces can now finally obtain the care they need without sacrificing their self-confidence. Ceramic clear braces can give you the opportunity to obtain the quality treatment you need without having to live with bulky metal braces.
