Differences Between Metal Braces and Clear Ceramic Braces
Although treatment using clear ceramic braces is similar in nature to traditional metal braces, there are some differences. First, prospective patients should be aware that the duration of treatment using clear ceramic braces may vary as compared to metal braces. Since ceramic brackets tend to be more fragile than metal brackets, if heavy forces are applied and brackets are broken, treatment times may be extended.
Some patients may also note that ceramic brackets tend to cause more irritation to soft tissues. Ceramics often have a rougher feel against the cheeks and lips than do metal brackets. Over time, most patients eventually become accustomed to that difference.
It’s not always possible to place ceramics on the bottom teeth due to the potential for significant wear. Due to this reason, we will need to evaluate your bite and the way your teeth overlap to determine whether ceramic braces are the best choice to place on your lower teeth.
You will also still need to wear elastic bands with clear ceramic braces. Most patients are able to select matching bands that are clear or tooth-colored, which can help to reduce the overall appearance of the braces.
There is often a tendency for light-colored elastics to become stained due to exposure to certain foods and beverages. This can prove to be visually distracting. Any food or beverage that has a strong color could potentially stain your bands, including tea, coffee, soda, berries, ketchup, mustard, or tobacco products. The bands are changed frequently so this should be not be a concern.
